SALAH

Prayer timings do not remain constant as they are
determined by looking at the sun. Consequently the
time of a particular prayer would be different in
different parts of the World. Prayer Time Tables are
easily available at the mosques and Islamic Centers
throughout the World. Now-a- days electronic devices
like 'TBilal" or "Spectronic" are available in the
market which can tell the prayer times of nearly 1000
major cities of the World. They are particularly
helpful to the Muslims travelling to non-Muslim
countries However, the following general timetable for
prayers can fairly be observed in almost any part of
the World. There are five obligatory prayers which are
performed at five different times of the day.

(1) Salat-ul-Fair. The morning Prayer

It is the first of the Five obligatory
prayers of the
day.lt can be performed at any time between the
breaking of the dawn till sunrise. It consists of two
raka's (two units as explained through the
accompanying postures).

(2) Salat-ul-Zuhr. The noon prayer

It consiss of four raka's, (4 units);
Its time begins
after the sun declines from its zenith until it is
about midway from setting.

(3) Sa la t-ul -Asr. The afernoon Prayer

It consists of four raka's (4
units). Its time begins
soon after the time for Zuhr prayer ends and extends
to just before sunset

(4) Salat-ul-Maghrib. The evening prayer

It consists of three raka's (3
units). Its time begins
just after sunset and extends to a period of an hour
and a half.

(5) Salat-ul-lsha. The night prayer.

It consists of four raka's (4 units)
and its time
begins about an hour and a half after sunset and
extends to dawn.

Of the 5 obligatory prayers mentioned above, one of
them contains two raka's, three contain four raka's
and one containing three raka's Each kind has been
explained separately. All the prayers (to be recited
in Arabic) and the postures in which to recite each
prayer have been explained with the help of the given
figures. The figures have been drawn in the order in
which each posture is assumed and the particular
prayer recited. In order to memorize the prayer for
each posture the reader only needs to look at the
number of the figure and listen to the tape while
looking at the transcript which gives the Arabic
prayer in Roman letters.

THE PARTIAL ABLUTION (Wudu')

Before offering the prayer one must be in good shape
and pure condition. It is necessary to wash the parts
of the body which are generally exposed to dirt or
dust or smog. This performance is called ABLUTION
(Wudu') and is preferably carried out as follows:

1. Declare the intention that the act is for the
purpose of worship and purity, start by saying
Bismillah.

2. Wash the hands up to the wrists, three times.

3. Rinse out the mouth with water, three times,
preferably with a brush whenever it is possible.

4. Cleanse the nostrils of the nose by sniffing water
into them, three times.

5. Wash the whole face three times with both hands, if
possible, from the top of the forehead to the bottom
of the chin and from ear to ear.

6. Wash the right arm three times up to the far end of
the elbow, and then do the same with the left arm.

7. Wipe the whole head or any part of it with a wet
hand, once.

8. Wipe the inner sides of the ears with the
forefingers and their outer sides with the thumbs.
This should be done with wet fingers.

9 Wash the two feet up to the ankles, three times,
beginning with the right foot.

At this stage the ablution is completed, and the
person who has performed it is ready to start to start
his prayer. When the ablution is valid a person may
keep it as long as he can, and may use it for as many
prayers as he wishes. But it is preferable to renew it
as often as possible. It is also preferable to do it
in the said order, although it will be accepted from
those who fail to keep this order. Ablution in the
said way is sufficient for prayer unless it is
nullified.by any reason.

Nullification of the Ablution

The ablution becomes nullified by any of the following

1. Natural discharges, i.e., urine, stools, gas,
etc...
2. The flow of blood or pus and the like from any part
of the body;
3. Vomiting;
4. Falling asleep;
5. Losing one's reason by taking drugs or any
intoxicating stuff.

After the occurrence of any of these things the
ablution must be renewed for prayer. Also, after
natural discharges, water should be applied because
the use of toilet tissues may not be sufficient for
the purpose of purity and worship.

The Complete Ablution (Ghusl/Bath)

The whole body with the nostrils, mouth and head must
be washed by a complete bath before commencing prayer
in any of the following cases:

1. After intimate intercourse;
2. After wet dreams; or night discharge;
3. Upon expiration of the menstruation period of
women;
4. At the end of the confinement period of nursing
women, which, is estimated at a maximum of forty days.
If it ends before, complete ablution should be done.
It should be pointed out that at the start of the bath
or ablution the intention must be clear that it is for
the purpose of purity and worship. Also, a person who
is performing an ablution, partial or complete, should
combine his performance with some utterances
glorifying God and asking Him for true guidance. The
forms of such utterances are described in detail in
the elaborate sources of the religion. One, however,
can say one's own best utterances if one does not know
the exact wording. That is sufficient as long as it is
in the praise of God and is said with sincerity.

NIYYAH(INTENTION)
When you stand up for Salah, your faces are directed towards the Qiblah..The first words you utter are:

ALLAHU AKBAR
Allah is the Greatest

TASBIH(GLORIFICATION)

YOU glorify and praise Allah thus:
Glory be to thee, O God, and all the praise that is Thine.Blessed is thy name and exalted is thy majesty. There is no god but thee.

TAAWWDUH(Seeking Refuge):

You now seek his protection:
I seek refuge in God from Satan, the rejected.

BISMILLAH(In His Name)

I begin in the name of God who is most merciful, the mercy-giving

HAMD(Praise)

Praise be to God,Lord of the worlds.
The most merciful, the Mercy – giving.
Master of the day of Judgement.
Thee alone do we worship and from thee alone we seek help.
Direct us on the straight path.
The path of those whom Thou hast favoured.
Not those who earn Thy anger nor those who go astray.
Amin!
O God! Let it be so. O Lord! Grant this our prayer.

THE QURAN READING:
Then you recite some parts of the Qur,an,each of which is full of wisdom and beauty. There are instructions, admonitions and lessons as well as directions to guide you on the same straight path for which you have just prayed in surah al-fatihah.

RUKU:BOWING DOWN

After reciting these instructions you say Allahu akbar and perform reku.Bending down before your Master with your hands resting on your knees, you repeat(either three or five or seven times):
Glory be to my lord, the Magnificent

Then you stand up straight and say:
Allah listens to him who praises Him

SUJUD:PROSTRATIONS

Then again saying Allahu Akbar, you prostrate your selves with forehead on the ground, and repeatedly utter:
Glory to my Lord, the Most High

AT-TAHIYYAT(SALUTATION)
To God belong all greetings of praise, all prayers, all good deeds.
Peace be on you,O prophet, and mercy of God and His blessing.
Peace be on us and on all true servants of GOD.
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.
While giving this testimony you raise your first finger:this symbolize the renewal of your pledge and commitment to the life of witness that you are required to live. While uttering it you must give special attention and emphasis to it.

SALAT ALA N-NABIYA:BLESSINGS UPON THE PROPHET
After this you call down blessings upon the prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him:

O God! Have mercy of Muhammad and his people just as thou blessed Ibrahim and his people.Indeed Thou art adorned with the best qualities and art sublime.O God! Bless Muhammad and his people just as you blessed Ibrahim and his people. Most certainly Thou art adorned with the best qualities and art sublime.

SEEKING PROTECTION:

The whole salah is an act of prayer, but towards the end you make a special prayer seeking His protection from all kinds of evils that might afflict you.

O God! I seek your protection from punishment in Hell, and I seek your protection from punishment in the grave, and I seek your protection from the mischief of al-masihi d-dajjal, and I seek your protection from the trials of life and death, and I seek your protection from sins and from indebtness.

SALAM(GREETINGS)
After reciting the above Dua, the prayer is complete. Now you have to return from the audience with your Master. The first thing you do on your return is to turn your heads to the right and to the left and pray for the safety and blessings of all those present and every thing in the world:

Peace be on you and the mercy of God.

Dua’ Qunut:

The concluding part of this salah consists of WITR.In the last rakah of the day, which turns all the rakahs you have prayed into an odd number, you make an important and comprehensive covenant with your Master. This is caleed Dua’Qunut. The meaning of qunut is affirmation of humility, subservience and service before God.

“ O God! We seek help from Thee; we ask Thee for guidance; we seek Thine forgiveness;we have faith in Thee;we put our trust in Thee;we give all good praises to Thee;we thank Thee, and do not commit ungratefulness;we abandon and leave everyone who disobeys Thee.

O God! Thee only do we worship. For Thee alone we perform the prayer and before Thee alone prostrate ourselves. All our endeavours and strivings are directed towards Thee, all our goals are centred on Thee.We hope to receive Thy mercy and fear Thy punishment.Certainly Thy dire punishment will befall only those who are disbelievers.
